I liked virtually nothing about the George as per my earlier email.

Please see earlier email small rooms, no cupboard in 1st 2 rooms allocated, noisy drip on roof in room 30, broken door lock in room 29, smell of gas in corridor, lack of reception function, no bar, no restaurant, no breakfast, TV didn't work properly and couldn't get BBC 1 - room 24 where I ultimately spent the night, exploitation of Polish girl to single-handedly look after 30 bedrooms 24/7 - totally unacceptable. No facility to book cab in snow to take me to office next day.

    The location

Nobody at reception when I checked in. Then a young guy came and try to find my booking (3 nights) couldnt't find it. Then he took some keys and tried some rooms till he found one that was suitable. Almost all lights didn't work. It looked old and messy. Just 2 very small soap (like the testers you get in a magazine) so I couldn't was hair and body with it. They didn't gave extra, so the 3rd morning I had to wash with only water. The broken empty packages were still on the floor in the shower, so it was obvious they didn't clean the shower! I took my suitcase with me every day, I didnt trust it to let my things in the hotelroom. People looked very unreliable, sorry. On checkout again nobody at reception (it even didn't look like a reception...) only a not with 'please leave your key here. This was my first and last time in this hotel.

The room was nice and had tv. We had booked a twin-bedded room, but that one wasn't available, so we got 2 separate/single rooms for the same price.

The noisy night life outside kept me awake.

  • Older travelers

    location is good

rooms are very small and basic. En suite is very small and lacked basics eg sufficent towels(very poor quality) toileteries. Room lacked hair dryer, or indeed coat & clothes hangers. Staff in the hotel were rarely seen throughout our stay, No opportunity for a breakfast is a deal breaker. Not to be recomended.

  • Group of friends

It is in the centre of Bishop Stortford so location is good.

I would not call it a hotel, it is very basic more like a B&B. The shower wasn't working properly. I think they are still renovating it. I will not be staying there again.

  • Group of friends

    Close to airport.

Bizarre arrangement. Hotel appeared to have no facilities (we weren't shown any), and was above a restaurant not connected to the Hotel. Room was clean, but bed was was very uncomfortable and noise from street was audible through a winding couldn't shut.

  • Couple

cheap - easy reach of town, helpful staff

    Its Haunted

  • Older travelers

The location, near to Stansted Airport. Available restaurant, historic building. Good taxi service

The shower room needs attention, the drain was blocked partially and there was an overflow into the bathroom

  • Older travelers

Location excellent. Handy for Stansted Airport Good bus and train service to Airport. Nice friendly staff. My third stay.

  • Older travelers

    Nothing apart from location.

No facilities. Unmanned reception. Front door open 24 hours with no security. Shower was blocked to overflowing. Terrible smell of mould in the bedroom. Not a hotel. More like a run down guest house without the breakfast.

Other than the shower not being attached to the wall very well. It was hot and full on.

They advertise WiFi. They do not have any. It should be explained better that bed and breakfast (breakfast is down the road in a cafe) Employee knew nothing of what was on the internet. No parking

A comfortable town centre hotel, where you are free to come and go as you like. The manager was excellent, carrying our bags to the room and available to ask questions if need be. Unlimited supply of tea and coffee.

The Hotel advertises itself as a 14th century quiet comfy well located premises with clean rooms with a bathroom. This could not be further from the truth. The rooms we booked had no bathrooms only shower rooms. Our room had plaster hanging off the wall and a broken toilet seat. The kettle did not work and the shower room handle came off in my hand. Despite reporting these faults no action was taken to rectify or even acknowledge my complaint. The Hotel itself is based in the middle of a very noisy area surrounded by 3 late pubs open until 2am with loud noise until well after 2.30am. Security was concerning with an unattended reception area and a door which was unlocked 24 hours per day. A notice requested guests to leave their room key when leaving the hotel on the unattended desk next to the unlocked door. During our 3 night stay our duvet was thrown over the bed but the bed was not actually made at any time. Soap and shampoo was not delivered until the 3rd day of our stay. There was no one to talk to and a telephone number at reception which was never answered. As a professional business traveller who stays in hotels 2/3 times per week I can say this is the worst hotel I have ever had the misfortune to stay in. I would seriously advise you to remove this hotel from your offering

The George was in a great location for the shops, train station and eateries.

The noise was a huge problem, I can usually sleep through anything, but this was something else! The night life was so busy and noisy that it was impossible to sleep through and I didnt manage to drop off until after 3am. The fact the the bed mattress was so uncomfortable and just one flat pillow each did not help. The shower was very good as other reviews have said. I thought I would manage with a little noise from the night life, but it was far worse than I could have imagined and I definitely wouldnt stay again because of it.

  • Older travelers

My wife and I decided on the spur of the moment to visit the Olympics. We needed a hotel near to Underground and booked the George. Upon reading the reviews we wondered if we had done the right thing. We thought ' what the heck' we are only there for 1 night. We were pleasantly surprised. Warm greeting and room 29 was very nicely decorated and clean. Bed comfortable, tea making facilities and shower was hot!.Although some outside noise this did not bother us. We realised that had to go out for breakfast and found very friendly and cheap cafe just down road (Mochas?) We would definately stay again.

Latecomers booking in after midnight whenwe had gone to bed.
